A neighbor told me about how she found a rabbit in her toilet the other night. She lifted the lid, screamed and ran for help. When she returned to the bathroom the couple looked at a little rabbit sitting on the dryer part of the porcelain toilet, shivering.

“How in the world did a rabbit get in our toilet?” They wondered. The seat was down. They had workers in the house the week before, but that wouldn’t explain how an animal hid in a house with two cats and a big dog for six days and then managed to lift the toilet seat and sit inside.

My first thought was mystical. Rabbits are luck, fertility, motion, change and represent good things in most cultures. I knew not to talk about my interpretation though as my neighbor explained how they donned thick gloves, removed the rabbit and took it outside where it immediately started eating the flowers. It was clearly starving ,choosing to eat rather than run away. Plus, it probably knew my neighbors are super kind to animals.

My friends summoned a plumber to discover how this could happen. He pushed the “snake” with a camera through their pipes to discover a massive hole. “That’s where the rabbit entered, but how it worked its way through to the toilet and stayed alive, I can’t imagine. You really need to replace your old pipes sooner than later.”

“How much?” my neighbor asked him.

“About $62,000.”

I prefer my approach to the situation. I’d much rather have spent the morning talking about what the rabbit represented in their lives. Cheaper and more fun.
